Collection of letters and manuscripts of Richard, Increase, and Cotton Mather. The collection ncorporates various items acquired between 1905 and 1927 and has been assembled at the Library Two manuscripts of Richard Mather: "An exhortation to our Countrymen of Lancashire, by Richard Mather and William Thompson" (1645, call number HM 705) and 64th and 65th lectures, (1650, June 11 and July 9, HM 980). Increase Mather's manuscripts include: a notebook containing observations on the matter of Henry Palmer and the church in Haverhill, Mass. (1656, HM 983, vol. 1 & 2); "An Essay for the Recording of Illustrious Providences (ca. 1700, HM 981), a fragment of a sermon (ca. 1700, HM 2153), and an address "To the Inhabitants of Boston at their Publick Meeting," (also signed by Cotton Mather and Benjamin Colman, 1718, May 13, HM 1452). Cotton Mather's manuscripts: his sermon (1699/1700, Mar. 17, HM 1347) and notes for a sermon (ca. 1710, HM 2154), letters to Michael Whigglesworth (1704, Apr. 17, HM 22326), Emanuel Matthews (1722, Nov. 5, HM 22324), and a Mr. Hollis (1726, Oct. 27, 22325; a list of marriages performed, addressed to Joseph Prout (1717-1718, HM 1450), and a presentation inscription to Ebenezer Bradshaw and George Hughes, apparently cut out from the flyleaf of a volume (ca. 1717). Increase and Cotton Mather's letters to Sir William Ashurst, treasurer (1681-1696) and governor (1696-1719/20) of the New England Company, the chartered company that established the Massachusetts Bay colony. There are 5 letters by Increase Mather (1712 - 1718, HM 22310-22311 and HM 22319-22321) and 14 letters by Cotton Mather (1712-1718, call numbers HM 22304- 22309, 22312 -22318, 22322-22323, and 222326).
